Tags: Uncategorized — Author: @ 2:37 pm

I have my level 4 Finnish final exam tonight at the University of Helsinki – wish me luck!! (cause I’m soooo gonna need it) ;-)

  • Hank W.

How would I now put it so you could understand… “katkaise jalkasi” ;)

  • Patrick

    Good luck!

Hey, isn’t this also the night when Kultainen Kuukkeli winners will be announced! J?¤nnitys tiivistyy siis kaikin puolin.

Phil: Oh, why bother. It’s a dying language.

    “?¤l?¤ r?¤?¤kk?¤?¤ kissaa. En min?¤ r?¤?¤kk?¤?¤kk?¤?¤n”.

    Ugly sounding, too.

Finnpundit? Dying? You must be joking as Finnish is growing language in Finland, just look at the percentage of Finns who use it. Most people I think see Swedish is going to be a insignificant compared to Russian and English who I think is going to replace it in 100 years time.

  • antti (the red neck one)

    “?¤l?¤ r?¤?¤kk?¤?¤ kissaa”

Wasn’t it “?¤l?¤ r?¤?¤kk?¤?¤ k?¤?¤kk?¤?¤” (k?¤?¤kk?¤ is a bird). At least the aesthetics is perfected with k?¤?¤kk?¤. Well, they had this big deal roman empire, but who writes his tax reports in latin outside the Vatican anymore. Meanwhile, finnish language has frozen some age old germanic words in their original form for thousands of years. For example, word “kaunis”, which have evolved to sk?¶n in swedish and sch?¶n in german.

I think the finnish language will be around as long as the finns are. After that it will be a strange toy for the academic eccentrics.

    -Kokoon, kokoon

Anybody remember that Czech sentence “Pardon me, but my throat is dry” ?

  • Hmmm.

Finnpundit, are you by any chance a native Swedish speaker? Each time I have heard somebody use that example, s/he has been a Swedish speaker.

Finnish has twice won the beauty contest of languages, with the sentences “Aja hiljaa sillalla” and “Alavilla mailla hallan vaara”. Interestingly, both contests were held in Italy, the country of opera.

I heard that our language also won the world wide beauty contest in Japan.
Two totally different countries, so it can’t be wrong

Finnish is a beautiful language and I have started learning it.
