yeah right, they’re all concerned that new competitors might not want to come.”hey GOV. please do not put off those companies we do not like to get easy money, not without a good fight”… just waving the jobs flag - after all its on consumers interests that there are jobs available. Not to mention that companies that have reasons to fear organised customers are better of far away from this yard

And the model to be implemmented would be similar to the swedish - uou have to google for it, but i suspect it has little to do with the american.

Well, class-action lawsuits cost businesses billions of dollars every year in the US. Of course the companies will pass the costs to consumers (hey, that’s why I pay $400 a month for a crappy health insurance that doesn’t even include a dental plan), but this drives prices up and hurts demand on their products. Not to mention all the hassle companies have to deal with. So I don’t really see why the Chamber of Commerce would want to have class-action lawsuits in Finland.

But of course it sounds much better to say “you don’t need more protection” than “we don’t want you to have better consumer protection because it costs us money.”

So you think they’re lying? I don’t know much about the CCC so I was just taking their word for it. What do you think could be their alterior motive? I guess they think this could just hamper growth. Plus, it seems like they (the CCC) do a lot of work for businesses and individuals for “free”, with class action lawsuits maybe they’ll hae a lot more (or less?) work on their hands.

Are you honestly suggesting you believe this is the real reason why the Chamber of Commerce says class action lawsuits are a bad idea? If so, think again.

I think consumers are quite well-protected in Finland. One good thing is The Consumer Complaint Board (Kuluttajavalituslautakunta), although it only makes recommendations. The service is free for consumers.

Unfortunately, the process is slow because the number of complaints has been rising for 5 years in a row, and they don’t seem to get more resources.
