Politics, current events, culture - In Finland & United States

Tervetuloa | Welcome
As an American living in Finland, I started this blog six years ago to address the political and cultural issues in Finland and the United States - but lately this blog is just a place for me to make fun of Finns and Americans. :-)

White House studies $4 gallon “nightmare” scenario

Tags: Uncategorized — Author: Phil @ 12:46 pm

U.S. gas prices are getting closer and closer to the prices in Finland. I remember (about 15 years ago) when Americans were freaking out over paying $1.00/gallon for gas – and now it’s $3/gallon. Maybe if you’re SUV got better gas mileage than 10-miles-to-the-gallon…it wouldn’t be such a “nightmare” situation!

  1. That’s one good thing (and about the only one?) about high taxes on gas; even when oil goes to $100 per barrel, our gas prices in Finland will be nowhere near double that they are now.

It was only a few years ago when gas in the US used to cost $1.10 a gallon. I can easily see how having that price double (or, soon, triple) is a major shock in US. It’ll be interesting to see how they’ll cope with $4/gallon or, eventually, more.

  2. Phil….that’s a photoshopped photo. It’s still on about $2 per gal.

  4. While I welcome higher gas prices as a spur to the development of fuel efficient automobiles and alternative fuels, there is a short-term problem: the buying power of the US consumer is curtailed, thus affecting economies all around the world.

Higher gas prices in the US should be a subject of concern to any nation (or group of nations, such as the EU) whose economies are dependent on an export surplus to the US.

  5. $3 a gallon, don’t make laugh! Here in the UK, it is $5,93 per gallon!

  6. Meanwhile, the roads in the US are crumbling.

  7. Roads are crumbling in Finland too. Of all the car+gas taxes maybe 10% is siphomned back to the infrastructure.

  8. Elaine – Are you sure? I read a seperate article (not on Drudge) with this same information. It’s some gas station in Malibu – probably just raising the prices extremly high to get free national advertising!

  9. Peak Oil, which is not the same thing as running out of oil – just that global oil extraction capacity peaks, will hit suburban sprawl very hard. On the downslope of oil extraction rate, gas prices will escalate Please get the problem under control before your economy crumbles taking the rest of the world with it.

  10. Hank, take a drive in Boston sometime…you’ll think Finland has the best fucking roads anywhere on the planet. Guaranteed or your money back.

Phil, why don’t you call home and ask?…gas ain’t $3 a gallon even in Hawaii or Alaska. It’s only $2.35 in Boston. People in Malibu might just be stupid enough to pay. Then again, I don’t believe most things on the net, especially bloggers claiming to be journalists who do little more than cut and paste the headlines.

  11. Gallon? Now what kind of ancient unit is that! How do I convert it in to the civilised SI-system?

Around here 95E bensa costs around 1,25 euros per litre now.

  12. In New York a gallon is currently around $2.20. A couple of days ago I heard in California the prices were around $2.50, but anything around $3.00 would have to be photoshopped, IMHO.

And yes, the crumbling roads are no joke. Driving Cross Bronx Expressway 50 miles an hour will make you feel as if the wheels were coming off.

  14. Eino-Kalevi, to those who have to work with foreign measurements there are 3.785 litres is a US gallon and 4.546 litres in a British gallon. This because there are 16 fluid ounces in a American pint and 20 fluid ounces in a British pint and both have 8pints to a gallon.

So Finnish petrol (gasoline) is 4,73??¬ ($6.23) per US gallon.

  16. Last night Jay Leno made a joke about the price of gas hitting $3/gal in California, – so it must be a real sign!

The joke was something like this [from memory]: “…didn’t we invade Iraq so we wouldn’t have to pay $3 per gallon? Oh, yeah, it was all about the oooooiiillllll!”

    Comment by Finnpundit — Tue, Mar 22nd, 2005 @ 7:44 pm

  17. Nah, I’m not worried about rising gas prices. The laws of supply and demand will solve all the problems because alternative energy sources will become more attractive as the price of oil increases.

  18. You do realize why alternative fuels are called alternative?

    Comment by Markku — Tue, Mar 22nd, 2005 @ 9:58 pm

  19. Well, if you watch Jay Leno, people in Cali are dumb as rocks and they drive giant, gas guzzler SUVs so maybe it’s just capitalism taking advantage of a market opportunity and screwing the dumb people on the west coast. The rest of the US hasn’t started to get near $3 though and, if Bush wants to stay alive, he’ll keep the prices low as the only friend better than jesus is the SUV who isn’t much of a friend without lots of fuel.

I hope to see it hit $3+ as maybe it will be the thing to get the US to wake up.
