Terrorism & Alcoholism

Tags: Uncategorized — Author: @ 11:45 pm

George Bush imposes on the freedoms & liberties of the American people in order to combat terrorism – Very little different than how the Finnish government plans to impose on your freedoms & liberties in order to combat alcoholism & homicide. From YLE

To reduce Finland’s high homicide rate, the council proposes that firearms licences be revoked from people that police know to be violent and alcoholic.

Don’t visit that detox center cause they might take your license away. That should certainly reduce the lines at those centers however.

The key to achieving this is through early intervention in cases of domestic violence.

Yes, let’s have the state intrude more in your family’s life, cause you’re too weak and stupid to handle things yourself…you’re a woman afterall!! And for every couple families they wrongly convict, they’ll be one that is rightfully slapped with a 20-day fine – so it’s worth it, right?

In two thirds of violent incidents either the culprit or victim – or both – have been drunk

Do stoners ever go kill each other? The worst accident that has ever happend to pot-smokers is slipping and falling while dialing out for pizza.

The council has no new tricks in its back pocket but rather points to a bag of old ones, such as cutting consumption through raising the alcohol tax and strictly regulating pubs and restaurants’ opening hours.

We’re raising the alcohol tax again?? Have murders skyrocketed since March of last year? I thought all the newspapers said people’s drinking habits really haven’t changed since the tax decrease? And regulating opening hours of pubs and restaurants? Yes, let’s give those low-paid restaurant workers even less hours per week, they don’t need that extra money. And how many drunks and whinos do you see at restaurants? I thought they hit up the Alko then wandered the streets or visited the parks.

Smacking Kids Breeds More Violence

My father spanked me every now and again and I turned out to be a little anti-war freedom-loving hippy. I guess I need to toughen up or something.

take a more proactive approach to marginalised members of society who easily resort to violence.

Although these plans will effect just about everyone, not just the “marginalised members of society.”

/end rant :-D

BTW read, search say in yahoo news, the articles about the new law that British pubs may now apply for licences to be open 24/7 (can apply – not say granted, a bit like Finnish asylum policy). there it seems the problems been all pubs close at 23, so everyone swigs up ten pints before 23 and then a terrible ruckus ensues as all the pubs spew the people out..

Yeah, we had similar problems in Baltimore. They forced all the bars to shutdown at 2am, so from 1:30-2:00 everyone chugged as boose as possible, and then the downtown area was not a pretty sight at 2am when everyone got booted out.

There used to be a law in Finland until about few years ago, according to which the abused party of domestic violence was entitled to withdraw her/his domestic abuse charge/force a withdrawal of domestic abuse charge made by the officials. Needless to say, there were very few domestic abuse cases in which the victim was a husband/wife (the child abuse cases were not withdrawable), as the abused adult often withdrew the charge, often due to threat of domestic abuse towards self or the children.

However, despite the legal changes, the mentality has stayed; namely, that adult domestic violence is a private business, and can only be solved by the couple. Which is true to a certain extent, and that’s the extent that both parties in question realise there is a problem. Facing charges may help some people (both abuser and abused) realise that abusing an another member of the society is not approved of by the society, whether it be inside the home walls or outside. Of course, that is not the only measure the society takes, but there is also family therapy and councel available, and also peer group therapy to both the abuser and abused, also safe houses for women and children (and what I understand, safe houses for men and children are also being planned).

But my point was, at some point, that domestic violence has been considered a ‘real’ crime for a very short time indeed, and that’s quite likely the reason why early intervention is still seen as a crucial measure. After all, some 40 women and 5-10 men die each year due to domestic violence. I haven’t seen the statistics on children, but reading the newspapers last year, I expect the numbers to be at least the same as men.

You’re quite correct, the tax on alcohol in this country is absolutely crazy. I bought today 3 liters of passable Australian Shiraz for almost 25 euros. Can you imagine paying that amount of money for simple everyday red. But at least its an easy way to fill up the coffers of the state. It seems I’ll have to rent a van and cross over to Germany for couple of hundred liters…

    Hi people!
I’m a new member here and I like this forum, I think its a good and a reasonable forum with ejucated people. Terrorism is the use of power agains civilians to achive a political goal. But I must say that nothing has really been acomplished yet in the war against terrorism.
