Finland for Thought
Politics, current events, culture - In Finland & United States

Tervetuloa | Welcome
I'm an American who's been living in Finland for six years (damn!). I started this blog to address some of the political, cultural, and current event issues in Finland and the United States.

...but mostly what you'll find here is: Finnish and American stereotypes, Funny YouTube videos about Finland, rants about our high taxes and low salaries, and [not-so] comedic differences between Finns and Americans. Enjoy! :-)

‘The Office’ meets ‘The Simpsons’

My favorite U.S. TV comedy show will meet my favorite U.K. TV comedy show next year. Ricky Gervais (AKA David Brent AKA The Brentmeister General) from BBC’s “The Office” has been asked to write for “The Simpsons.”

Gervais says, “It’s the greatest show on earth and I’m sure that all I can do is make it slightly worse”

Ricky Gervais & Homer Simpson have to be the two funniest people in the history of comedy. Ever since the end of The Office last Christmas (14 episodes is way too few for such an incredible show), I’ve been dying to know what Ricky Gervais will do next.

In case you give damn, I think my Top 5 favorite TV comedies of all time are…

1. The Simpsons
2. Mr. Show
3. Saturday Night Live (Late 80’s - 1995)
4. The Office
5. South Park

  1. Hey, something I can agree with! Office is great. I got the complete box set as a Christmas gift from Johanna (which wasn’t a bad gift from her point of view either). The Christmas special is just brilliant.

We’ve been watching Black Books, too, just finished Season 1 yesterday. While The Office is a perfect example of “serious” humour, Black Books is one of the better shows when it comes to absurdity.

Being a fan of Simpsons, how do you like Family Guy? We like it probably better than Simpsons, at least it’s all quite fresh unlike the later Simpsons seasons. Then again, it was terminated after three seasons so it didn’t have the time to go stale. Still, brilliant material and if you haven’t seen it, you really should.

Doing my top-5 list is tricky, but I guess there’s Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Family Guy, Fast Show, Black Adder and The Office. Very British, that is. Simpsons and Futurama aren’t far, but the rest of the runners-up are either Finnish (Julmahuvi, Kummeli) or British (Smack the Pony, Black Books, Absolutely Fabulous, Big Train).

  2. Wow, my first post where lefties, conservatives, and libertarians can all agree on. :-D

I haven’t heard of this “Black Books”, I’ll definitely need to check it out, thanks for the info!

“Family Guy” is good, but Simpsons is way better IMO. IMO, Family Guy is a big rip-off of the Simpsons, the father in the show is written exactly like Homer Simpson. But yeah, the last couple seasons of the Simpsons have been sub-par. My Ricky Gervais can help them out!

  3. Re: Family Guy - well, yeah, there’s a connection, but there’s a difference too: Simpsons is a family show, Family Guy isn’t. So their sense of humour is not restricted by what can be shown to 12 year olds and what not. Besides, while Peter is a focal point of Family Guy, it’s Stewie who we’re watching it for.
