Tervetuloa | Welcome
I'm an American who's been living in Finland for five years. I started this blog to address some of the political, cultural, and current event issues in Finland and the United States. I am a strong advocate of liberty, individuality, equality, and tolerance. Enjoy!

Finnish tax cuts mean 33 euros extra for average-waged person

Filed under: Uncategorized — Phil @ 11:31 pm

If you make the average Finnish monthly gross income wage of 2,400 euros, you’ll stand to get a tax cut of 1.3% and take home an extra 33 euros per month (before taxes), after taxes you might get an extra 20 bucks a month.

Don’t spend it all in one place, guys. These miniscule tax cuts won’t do a damn thing to affect the economy. I’m looking forward to next year when the socialists will be shouting, “Last year we had all these tax cuts and NOTHING has changed!! See how good tax cuts are?!?”

At least these tax cuts are better than nothing, but what Finland needs is SPENDING cuts.

Government Details Tax Cut Proposals

Filed under: Uncategorized — Phil @ 11:21 pm

After weeks of income negotiations, they have (unfortunately) come to an agreement and the government has vowed to keep it’s promise for tax cuts. One of the biggest changes will be to abolish the capital tax (wealth tax) .

So wait, a bunch of grumpy old union representatives have been fighting so the wealthy can get some big tax cut? I thought these guys were supposed to represent the “working class” citizens? Hmmmm…..

Merry Chrismukkah!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Phil @ 10:03 pm

Tired of not being able to find greeting cards for your friends who are both Christian *AND* Jewish?? Well no fears this year, the card company “MixedBlessing” have created 10 new cards that acknowledge both Christmas and Hanukkah.

For most of you, this sounds totally ridiculous. But for oversensitive politically-correct American left-wingers, these cards are about 30 years overdue. These American lefties (very different from Finnish lefties) often get offended if they are Jewish and receive a Christmas card, or vice versa. Well, rather, they don’t get offended, they think you should get offended if this happens to you.

I dunno about you, but if someone were to send me a Happy Hanukkah card, I’d be happy to receive it and wish them a Happy Hanukkah back. Or if someone wished me a Happy Kwanzaa on the street, I’ll wish them a Happy Kwanzaa right back, or maybe I’ll wish them a Merry Christmas, or maybe I’ll just smile. But if you are an politically correct American, you better wish them a Happy Holidays only.

Fox News - Unfair and Unbalanced?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Phil @ 9:40 pm

Fox News gets a lot of criticism….they also get a lot of high ratings. They pride themselves on their motto, “Fair and Balanced.”

Although they themselves are not “fair and balanced”, they help create a “fair and balanced” national news media. The vast majority of news outlets in the U.S. are left-wing, so, if you watch a particular story on both Fox News and another news service…you’ll get both sides of the issue.

At least everyone knows that Fox News in right-wing, some people believe still think that news outlets like CNN are truly unbiased! But unfortunately Fox News stories come across like some of this tabloid yellow-journalism you’ll find in Finnish newspapers like Ilta-Lehti and Ilta-Sanomat. Their articles are designed to get some shock value from it’s viewers. Fox often reminds me alot like Michael Moore’s style of Info-tainment.
